The mission of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Registry Program is to improve orthopaedic care through the collection, analysis, and reporting of actionable data. The Program's vision goes beyond hips and knees to include additional anatomic registries. Beginning with the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), the AAOS Registry Program is managed by AAOS as a multi-stakeholder participation model. Stakeholders include representatives from the orthopaedic surgeon community, device manufacturers, hospitals, private payers, and the public. The AAOS Registry Program will continue AJRR public advisory best practices that help enhance the value of registries by ensuring a public voice in data collection, reporting, and utilization activities.
Public Advisory Board Charter Expands
The AAOS Registry Oversight Committee (ROC), chaired by Daniel J. Berry, MD, recently expanded the role of AJRR’s Public Advisory Board to represent the needs and concerns of the public across the entire AAOS Registry Program. It is now the AAOS Registry Program Public Advisory Board (PAB). The PAB mission continues to be the improvement of public value across current and future AAOS Registry Program registries.
“The experience and dedication of our Public Advisory Board members has always been highly valued by the AJRR Steering Committee and I’m grateful for the knowledge and insight they’ll now bring to the entire AAOS Registry Program,” said Dr. Berry. “We continue to look forward to the great work they have started with the AJRR and now across the AAOS family of registries.”
Margaret VanAmringe, MHS, Chair of PAB, added “The Public Advisory Board members are selected because they have made contributions to other patient/consumer groups, are people with past orthopaedic surgeries, or have special involvement with other important public stakeholders. As the PAB work expands, we look forward to adding representatives who will augment the current experiences contained within the group. I am especially grateful for the wide-breadth of talent that we have on the PAB, including members who have had multiple orthopedic surgeries themselves and are committed to improving quality for future patients. This input only makes for a stronger overall Registry Program.”

The PAB has already identified three important priorities to support their mission in the larger AAOS Registry Program environment.
- Create and implement action plans that best support multiple anatomical registries within the Program.
- Create and implement action plans that significantly increase institutional and patient participation in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) programs offered by registries within the Program.
- Expand PAB membership with individuals who will augment the current experiences contained in the group.
Building on Past AJRR Accomplishments
PAB will follow many of the successful practices first refined by AJRR and now part of the PAB Charter. Some examples, though not all, are shared below.
- To serve as ambassadors for the AAOS Registry Program to the public and patient groups/sites with related interests like AAOS OrthoInfo;
- To advise on efforts to develop and utilize quality measures, including public reporting of data and pay-for-performance programs, such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reporting that is facilitated by Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR) designation;
- To provide guidance to the public and interested stakeholder groups including:
- information about the AAOS Registry Program and orthopaedic procedures for patients, like the AJRR Annual Report;
- public reports from the AAOS Registry Program that are credible and understandable, such as the AJRR Report to the Public; and
- the dissemination of public research findings based on AJRR data collection and analysis that can help patients understand their treatment plan options.
