Spreading Sarcoma Awareness with Patient and Surgeon Stories

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month. Few people can tell you that sarcoma is a rare cancer of the soft tissue and bone with over 70 subtypes. And even advocacy groups call it “a forgotten cancer.” But for the tens of thousands of Americans living with sarcoma, sarcoma isn’t rare: it’s a daily reality.

Sarcoma deserves recognition 365 days a year, not just during July.

2021: A Year of Continued Growth for AAOS Registries

For the AAOS Registry Program, 2021 was a year of significant expansion and noteworthy achievements, as it continued its growth trajectory and introduced several new visual and analytical enhancements.

“AAOS registries have grown and matured considerably over the past four years,” said AAOS Registry Oversight Committee Chair William J. Maloney, MD, FAAOS. “With more than 2.5 million procedures collected from five registries, the AAOS Registry Program has made large strides toward its mission to improve orthopaedic care through the collection, analysis, and reporting of actionable data.”

Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry Trial is a Success

In February 2019, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), announced the launch of a Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry (MsTR) feasibility pilot. The pilot, part of the AAOS Registry Program, captures data on orthopaedic oncology bone tumor procedures in a structured and scalable way. As part of Sarcoma Awareness Month (July), sponsored by the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA), this week’s blog provides an update on MsTR pilot progress.

AAOS Introduces Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry Pilot

Year-long effort includes six pilot sites at major U.S. academic centers

AAOS, in collaboration with the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), announced the launch of a Musculoskeletal Tumor (MsT) Registry feasibility pilot to begin capturing data on orthopaedic oncology bone tumor procedures in a structured and scalable way. Six major U.S. academic centers were selected to participate in the year-long program: Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Ohio State University–The James Cancer Hospital, Stanford Health Care–Stanford Hospital, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
